Intuition is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

While some of us are naturally more in tune with our intuition, I believe that we’re all born with this gift. Children are incredibly intuitive. But as we grow older, we begin to prioritize the noise of the world over the whispers of our inner voice. If you were fortunate enough to grow up in a spiritual household, you might have stayed more connected to those subtle energies. For many of us, though, it takes practice to reconnect with that intuitive part of ourselves.

The universe is always speaking to us, sending us messages, but most of the time, we don’t listen.

I grew up in a Christian household where daily prayers were a part of life. I remember talking to what I called God every day. One morning, when I was about five years old, my mother was overwhelmed with stress. She was in an abusive marriage with three young kids, and life was tough for everyone. I must have been stubborn that day, resisting her instructions to get ready for kindergarten. Suddenly, an angel appeared before me, gently telling me to brush my teeth. This angel looked just as my 5-year-old self imagined an angel would – blonde, sweet, and glowing, like something out of a whitewashed Christmas story. I listened, brushed my teeth, and we were finally ready to leave the house.

Spirit meets you where you are and speaks to you in ways you can recognize and understand.

Spirit shows up in familiar ways. The universe, Goddess, God, Spirit, Energy – All that is – speaks to us in ways we can understand if we’re open to listening. When we’re connected to our intuition, there are no ordinary moments. Everything is a sign. But listening to our intuition takes practice.

Signs can come in many forms – a bodily sensation, a tingling, or a feeling in your gut. It might be an animal showing up unexpectedly, a picture, a vision, or words from someone that deeply resonate with you. Sometimes, it’s just a whisper, a feeling, or a thought. Other times, it could be pain in your body trying to communicate something important. The universe is persistent, and if you don’t listen the first time, it will keep trying to get through to you in different ways.

The more you engage in practices that enhance your consciousness, the more you tune into your intuition. I remember a time when I was deeply frustrated during my years as a creative copywriter in advertising – a few months before my burnout. At that time, I started seeing auras around people. I’d ride my bike through Berlin-Kreuzberg in the mornings and notice colors surrounding people. It was a period when I was turning inward, questioning my life path, and spirit was guiding me to reconnect with my spiritual side and make a change. I still needed the burnout to realize how much harm I was opening myself up to in those environments.

Delays are not denials. Sometimes we need to take an extra detour to learn the lesson.

As I tuned more into my intuition, I began to prioritize my time and energy differently. I focused on what truly nourished me – choosing the right foods, practicing yoga daily, and spending time in ways that felt right. I remember skipping team lunches and instead going to yoga classes during lunch breaks, or, if yoga wasn’t available, having lunch alone. One day, I was sitting alone in a café at Schlesisches Tor in Berlin (if you know the area, you know it’s not the most peaceful place), reading the Bhagavad Gita, a key spiritual text by Vyasa from the Mahabharata that delves into duty, righteousness, and the nature of the self. A young man noticed my book and struck up a conversation, curious about what I was reading. It wasn’t about flirting; he was genuinely interested in the Bhagavad Gita. We had a brief conversation and then parted ways. That moment later reminded me of how deeply I had committed to my spiritual development and created my own peaceful oasis amid the chaos when everyone else did differently.

Over the years, my intuition has become a guiding force. My yoga and meditation practices have only strengthened it. I’m more confident now, more aware of the signs that show up. Even when it feels uncomfortable or like I’m missing an opportunity, I listen. Whether it’s bypassing a street that gives me bad vibes or staying away from people, situations, places, jobs, foods, or anything else that doesn’t align with me, I trust my intuition. I’ve become more aware of the energetic space I’m navigating.
