Yoga and Liberation

𖥸𖥸 As a Black woman teaching yoga to racialized communities, I know this practice has been co-opted and disconnected from its roots in many ways.

Yoga teaches us that self-awareness and self-care aren’t separate from care for others. Separation is only an illusion, and the practice of yoga, when approached with the right intention, helps us see beyond it. So when we approach our practice with intention and purpose, it becomes a transformative and healing journey that expands our consciousness. This consciousness empowers us to take meaningful action. And from this grounded space of clarity and compassion, we can channel our resources - whether it’s our voice, time, skills, or influence - toward creating a more just and compassionate world.

What you make of yoga is up to you. If you approach it with the intention to connect, to heal, and to create space for others, it can absolutely be a tool for collective liberation. If you only see it as an individual journey, that’s valid too - but don’t forget that yoga, in its truest form, is about much more than personal peace. 𖥸𖥸
